Toon Eyeing 32-Year-Old Free Agent?

|

Continuing the trend of Newcastle being linked with any player drawing breath, the Magpies are now named among several clubs who are potentially interested in bringing Gareth Bale onto the books according to HITC.

Bale has confirmed that he has left Real Madrid and will become a free agent, alerting the likes of Tottenham, Rangers and Newcastle.

The Welshman’s time in Madrid has been frought with controversy and he never truly felt settled there, often being attacked online by fans and accused of not giving his all for the club. However, his stats paint a different picture with him scoring 106 goals in 258 games along with 67 assists. Not forgetting his memorable brace which won Madrid the Champions League in 2018, which included THAT overhead kick.

In times gone by, signing a player at 32 years of age in the Premier League would almost be laughable, but players’ fitness levels these days are insane. So while before 32 would usually signify the beginning of the end as players start to drop down the leagues, the likes of Christiano Ronaldo have proved that age is just a number as long as you look after yourself properly. Bale can definitely still mix it with the big boys, but whether he will fit in with the Newcaslte revolution is a different matter.

His recent loan spell at Tottenham, while decent, didn’t do enough to earn him a Premier League return. The other stumbling block would likely be his wage demands. Being a free agent usually allows players to take advantage of no transfer fee by demanding some of that money for themselves, and as we know, Newcastle will not be bullied into paying over the odds for anything or anyone.
