Meet your fan of the week

|

At Vital Football- Newcastle, we are not all about the team but also the fans, the men, women and children that make this great club what it is, meet your fan of the week MARCO WYSS

My name is Mark Wyss and I’m a proud Geordie (I’m actually half-Geordie and half-Swiss, but it’s worked out OK for Fab Schär hasn’t it?!). My hometown is Newbiggin-by-the-sea in Northumberland and this remains my constant anchor in life, having also lived in Switzerland, near Stockport, Manchester and currently, Liverpool.

I have a hazy memory of my dad (Swiss) taking me to a game at SJP when I may have been around 7 or 8; no idea of the year or game!  But I wasn’t a proper NUFC fan as such, having flirted with various other Swiss (Young Boys anyone?!) and English teams.  Sometime between 1984 and 1986, Paul my oldest childhood friend from Newbiggin, and his older brother, took me to the Gallowgate at SJP for the first time…and I fell in love! Again, can’t remember the year or opposition but Gazza must have been playing because he became my hero.

I have lived in Liverpool for more than twenty years and have 17-year old twin boys who are also proud Mags,  and as Liverpool is doing so well we are definitely not GLORY HUNTERS!

We get to as many games as we can and we live and breathe the club.  NUFC is one of the most important things in my life and has brought me great pleasure; the biggest highlight is my Bayer Leverkusen Champion’s League away trip on Sir Bobby’s 70th birthday in 2003…and going to London last July to protest for transparency from the Premier League! My lowlight was in 2020, leaving Goodison in the 90th minute before Lejeune scored his two equalising goals! Give awa man!

My favourite players have to be Messrs. Ginola and Albert, in all their maroon and blue-hooped pomp.  Guilty pleasure? Bellamy!

It is still truly intoxicating every time we drive past the Angel, Local Hero blasting out the speakers, getting the first view of SJP to our right…then the walk to the cathedral, the first glimpse of the turf and the spectacle of Wor Flags. No, that’s just something in my eye, honest…
