Following Newcastle United’s takeover by the Saudi Arabia backed Public Investment Fund, the club have not been shy in beginning to the splash the cash in recent transfer windows – and it seems that this summer will be no different given the rumour mill speculation that they feature on.
This has no doubt been boosted by the fact they now have Champions League football to look forward to in the 2023/24 campaign following their fourth place finish last season in the Premier League, and manager Eddie Howe, naturally needs to add further quality and depth to their squad if they are again looking to progress further and consolidate their position, especially in light of the extra games.
Given the numerous links surrounding the club right now, AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali would definitely provide an improvement to the club, and it has now been claimed that a deal has been roughly agreed in principle between both sides and while the final points are still to be ironed out, it could be worth £68.5 million, including add ons, to the Italian Serie A side.
For the 23 year old player himself, the rumours state that he is very likely to quickly sign a new six year deal on Tyneside and that a medical will likely be completed within a matter of days. That information, as reported, seems to come directly from the 14 capped Italian’s agent, Guiseppe Riso, directly.
“There are still a few days left, a little more. The player-side agreement has been reached, Milan and Newcastle are sorting out the last bureaucratic details. That done, in the next few He will have to undergo the medical visits for a few days. Sandro is very serene.”
Should Tonali depart, it will undoubtedly be a loss for AC Milan, but it will definitely be a gain for Newcastle as they get a player who more than played his part in helping the Rossoneri to the Scudetto in 2021/22 and they also reached last season’s Champions League semi finals.
Given his age, he also a clearly a player still in development and despite 14 full caps for his country, his growth will only be aided by the fact he is is the Azzurri’s Under 21 squad for the European Championships.
If the deal goes through, plenty will be watching on to see how he adjusts to life in England given his success in Italy.
