If recent rumour mill reports are to be believed, it seems newly incredibly wealthy Newcastle United will not be denied in their search for a Serie A capture this summer, and despite having already been rebuffed in their chase for two targets in particular, they are back for a third name and this time it concerns AC Milan talisman Sandro Tonali.
Following Newcastle’s earlier takeover by the Saudi Arabia backed Public Investment Fund, they have already splashed a fair bit of cash as they look to turn around the fortunes of the club and in the 2022/23 domestic English campaign (the first full campaign under the new owners), they achieved a fourth placed finish and now have Champions League football to look forward to next season, and clearly strengthening manager Eddie Howe’s first team squad is a key aim this summer.
Newcastle have dabbled with the Italian league before and according to reports back in the January transfer window they apparently tabled a 100 million Euro offer for Napoli ace, Victor Osimhen. This deal naturally fell down as the club were in the process of fighting for their third Scudetto and Aurelio De Laurentiis has been recently on record as stating a minimum of 150 million Euros would be required to tempt them into selling their Nigerian star.
Newcastle returned with an interest in Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella, but the reported 60 million Euro offer was well below the clubs own expectations and valuation, so that too, also quickly fell by the wayside.
And that brings us to Tonali. The 23 year old defensive midfielder has good experience for his age following his time at Brescia, and then Milan and he has become an integral part of their side in recent years, and now has 14 Italian international caps to his name.
It is claimed that Newcastle have already had a 60 million Euro offer dismissed by the club, but they are expected to return with an improved offer – and additional rumours in the Italian media claim that the club are open to a deal happening if there is a more acceptable proposition placed on the table.
It does not take too much of a leap to think the player themselves would be interested in the Premier League riches given Milan’s own recent issues with Financial Fair Play.
