Former Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse dreams of returning to Newcastle United one day as a fan.

The 34-year-old, who currently plays his football for the Turkish outfit Ananyaspor, spent four-and-a-half years on Tyneside before joining the Chinese Super League outfit Shandong Luneng in 2016.

Before the football season was suspended, the former Senegal international had scored 16 goals, which has taken his overall total to 33 from 55 appearances for his new club.

Cisse was a fan favourite at St James’ Park and has not returned to Newcastle since his departure four years ago.

Speaking to the Chronicle Live, Cisse hailed the fans and dreams of a return to the club that made him feel incredibly welcome.

Was Papiss Cisse a success for Newcastle?

Yes

No

No

“For me, Newcastle fans are the best in the world”, he said. Sometimes, I sit here and my friends will send me videos of when Newcastle fans were singing my name. I cannot ever forget Newcastle United.

“It’s going to stay part of me because I love this team. It’s my team. It’s the team of my heart. In all my career, in all the teams I have played at, I gave everything and if I left, I left but Newcastle is not like that.

“I want to come to Newcastle and this stadium again as a fan. That’s part of my dream.”

With Joelinton spectacularly faltering during his debut campaign, fans would love nothing more than see the return of Cisse, who scored 44 goals in 131 outings for us.

In his first season, the Senegalese striker scored 13 goals for us. On that statistic alone, he would do a better job than Joelinton in this team right now.

With a proposed £300m takeover on the table, the squad is expected to be completely overhauled as we look to put ourselves in a similar picture that we were in during the 1990s.

If we can sign a player that can make a similar impact as Cisse did, we will be in good hands going forward.
