Newcastle are interested in signing defender Calum Chambers from Arsenal this summer, a report from The Daily Star has claimed.

Chambers’ fellow centre back Rob Holding had reportedly been close to a loan move to St James’ Park earlier in the transfer window, but has now been convinced to stay in North London by manager Mikel Arteta, forcing the Magpies to look elsewhere.

According to this latest update, that has now seen Newcastle turn their attention to Chambers, who featured just 18 times in all competitions for the Gunners last season, having spent the season before on loan at Fulham as they suffered relegation from the Premier League.

It is thought that Arsenal are willing to sell this summer, and would want around £12million for the centre back, who has two years remaining on his current contract at The Emirates.

However, Newcastle are said to be more keen on a loan move for the 25-year-old, who could become their sixth senior summer signing after Callum Wilson, Jamal Lewis, Mark Gillespie, Ryan Fraser and Jeff Hendrick.

Having missed out on Holding, Chambers may not be a bad alternative for Newcastle to go after here.

The 25-year-old does seem to be well down the pecking order at Arsenal, although there is no doubt he has potential and will feel as though he has something to prove, meaning he could be open to a move to the North East.

But with the two clubs seemingly some way apart in their stance over the terms of a deal, you feel there is still much to be done before there is any chance of seeing Chambers in a Newcastle shirt this season.
