Newcastle are one of several clubs interested in a move for Inter Milan midfielder Joao Mario this summer, a report from Portuguse outlet O Jogo has claimed.

The Magpies have already been busy in the summer transfer window, making five senior signings so far, and it seems as though the north east club may not be done just yet.

According to the latest reports, Newcastle have made an enquiry to Inter about the availability of Mario this summer, and it appears as though Bruce and co. could be in luck.

It is thought that Inter manager Antonio Conte has deemed the Portuguese international surplus to requirements this summer, and the 27-year-old could be available for a fee in the region of £12million.

Fellow Premier League sides Leeds and West Ham – where Mario spent a spell on loan in 2018, making 14 appearances and scoring twice – are also said to have made contract about the midfielder, while La Liga pair Valencia and Real Betis, along with Turkish giants Galatsaray, have all also been credited with an interest.

With Newcastle’s frailties having been badly exposed by Brighton at the weekend, this could be a deal worth looking into for the Magpies.

At his best, Mario can be a dominant presence in the centre of the park, which would help the Magpies take control of games, and his experience of top level football could certainly be useful.

It also seems as though the midfielder could be reasonably affordable for Newcastle, although you wonder if this could develop into something of a bidding war, meaning that winning the race for Mario could yet prove something of a coup.
