Newcastle ‘trigger’ Dummett extension

|

Newcastle United have exercised their option to extend Paul Dummett’s stay by a further 12 months.

This is according to a report by The Football Insider, who also claim that United will now enter negotiations with the local lad to make sure his contract is further extended.

As a result of a string of bad injuries, Dummett must have been fearing the worst over his Newcastle career but he has shown his worth and has been included in each of Steve Bruce’s last 10 starting 11s.

His return to the side has coincided with the massive upturn in fortunes that has seen us go from looking likely to go down to avoiding the drop with relative ease.

He has been part of a three man centre back unit that has added some stability to the side and his efforts were rewarded when he headed home his first goal in over five years during the 4-2 win at the King Power Stadium.

Prior to this run of games, Dummett had barely featured for the Magpies this season and had started just two games as a result of an Achilles injury he picked up last season that kept him off the pitch for longer than a year.

He may not be the flashiest of defenders but his old fashioned approach to the game makes him an ever reliable figure in the Magpies defence whether he is utilised in the middle or at left back and he has shown himself to arguably be United’s best defender.

The Wales international could reach a milestone of appearances tomorrow as it will be his 200th appearance for the club if he plays any part in the game against the already relegated Sheffield United.

Dummett is a rare example of a player coming through the ranks on Tyneside and it is a positive sign from the club to keep their homegrown talent.
