Former Newcastle United loan star Jetro Willems is reportedly close to rejoining the club on a free transfer.

This is according to the German outlet BILD, who claim that the full back has turned down the offer of staying with Eintracht Frankfurt beyond his current deal which expires this summer.

It has been a frustrating season for the Dutchmen and he has not featured at all for the German side but he has recovered from the horrific knee injury that saw his fruitful loan move be cut short.

The 27-year played some great football on Tyneside, his link up with Allan Saint-Maximin in particular was a joy to watch and the pair seemed to drum up a good friendship during Willems’ temporary stay.

This deal is one that many Toon fans will be hoping comes to fruition and there are many reasons why this is something that would be good for both parties.

Willems is extremely well liked from his time with the club, his marauding runs forward from left wing back put fans on the edge of the seat and he had a trick in his locker when in the right position.

As well as the fans enjoying watching him, Willems seemed to be playing football with a smile on his face and after the year out he has had, this could be the right move to allow him to get back into the swing of things.

Also, with the deal being a free transfer, it very much fits the bill in trying to keep summer spending to a minimum with the covid-19 pandemic still having an impact on the transfer kitty.

Finally, the system Newcastle have lined up in of late has had a big impact on our eventual survival and it is tailor made for a player like Willems. As a wing back, it would give him reign to bomb forward and showcase his attacking flair.

This transfer should be a no brainer but unfortunately this is Newcastle United and nothing is straight forward.
