Newcastle are said to still be keeping tabs on James Maddison at Leicester as things at the East Midlands club continue on a downward trajectory.
Transfer insider, Dean Jones told GIVEMESPORT that “They’ll definitely be keeping an eye on it, but Leicester’s situation will determine whether he becomes available.
“It’s hard to imagine that they’re going to let anyone leave halfway through a season when they’re fighting for their Premier League status.
“They’ve already had players ripped out and they’re struggling to bounce back from that.”
Newcastle, as we know, aren’t likely to get any favours from fellow Premier League clubs, so you’d imagine that any move Newcastle may try to make in January with regards to Maddison will likely bear no fruit, however, it’s good to see that the hierarchy aren’t likely to give up that easily.
The Northern Echo have also suggested that Newcastle’s interest remains, also going on to mention that Ian Wright believes that Maddison wanted to join Newcastle in the summer but the stumbling block of Leicester’s valuation of the midfielder remained too high.
Maddison is entering the last two years of his contract at Leicester, so it is getting to a point where the club would really need to start looking at getting a good fee for Maddison before he enters the last year of his contract and his value drops like a stone as he edges closer towards being able to leave for free.
Leicester look to be struggling this season and if that continues, they could find themselves in a precarious league position come January which could mean Maddison would be more keen to leave, but at the same time would make Leicester more desperate to hold on to him.
January is already gearing up to be an interesting month and we’re only in September. I don’t know about you, but I love this shift in gears – already talking about January transfers in September. We used to be lucky if we had any January transfer stories in January itself.
