Loris Karius Short-Term Deal Confirmed

|

Newcastle United today confirmed that they have indeed signed former Liverpool goalkeeper, Loris Karius on a short-term deal following the injury to Karl Darlow.

The deal was pushed through on Thursday last week, the final day to register the 25-man squad with the Premier League, so the whole thing moved extremely quickly with Karius having to make up his mind on the move extremely quickly in order to get to Newcastle and go through all of the formalities.

For all the deal was completed on time, the announcement was delayed until today following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

NUFC TV have spoken to Karius and it seems like he knows his role already, and has vowed to push Nick Pope and help him to stay on top of his game, but hasn’t given up hope of some game time.

Karius was also full of praise for Eddie Howe and the way he’s got Newcastle playing, saying: “I’m excited. It’s a good opportunity for me and a great project to be part of. It didn’t take me long to make a decision.

“Newcastle have a great coach and play really attractive football. I felt it was the right project for me and I’m excited to work with the coaches and my new teammates.”

The deal will keep Karius at Newcastle until January, by then it’s likely that Darlow will be fit again, however, if not, Newcastle do have a clause in the Dubravka deal that we can recall him in January should we so wish, so it does seem unlikely that Karius will be around beyond that. Unless of course, he’s called into action and does something outstanding to earn an extension.

Loris Karius was on Liverpool’s books between 2016-2022 making 29 appearances for The Reds in that time. During that period he had loan spells at Besiktas and Union Berlin after a disastrous appearance in goal for Liverpool in the 2018 Champions League final. It was later revealed that Karius was playing with a concussion following a coming together with Sergio Ramos.
