Newcastle United got off to the best possible Premier League restart, but it wasn’t necessarily like that for one player, in particular.

A stunning second-half display meant that the Magpies won 3-0 at St James’ Park against Sheffield United, with Allan Saint-Maximin, Matt Richie and Joelinton scoring in the second half to secure all three points.

In what was a perfect afternoon for Steve Bruce’s side, for Jonjo Shelvey however, it wasn’t.

Although he did keep himself out of trouble, he also kept himself out of the action and was away from the limelight at St James’ Park.

The former England international has previously been described as a “liability” by The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards following a disappointing performance earlier in the season against Brighton, accusing him of going missing when he is supposed to make the team tick.

Does Jonjo Shelvey deserve a new contract?

Yes

No

No

Despite what mays seem to be harsh words, his performance against the Blades somewhat replicated a Houdini act. Some may argue that his influence was not needed but considering how highly he was acclaimed as a youngster at Liverpool, he needs to be performing better.

During the 90 minutes, he did not make any interceptions in midfield, he lost possession 13 times and had one shot on goal which was blocked, as per Sofascore. A lack of influence at both ends of the pitch has been a typical complaint by some of his critics.

It was disappointing to see Shelvey so quiet, as time and again he has had some good outings for the club. However, his inconsistency will no doubt frustrate the Toon Army.
