Mark Douglas delivers fresh Newcastle takeover update

Newcastle United’s prospective £300m takeover appears to be edging ever closer to completion, so much so that this week could be quite imperative.

According to ChronicleLive reporter Mark Douglas, there could be a decision in the early part of this week, thus leaving an official announcement to follow soon after.

In a recent column, he said:

“The long-running saga, which has become enmeshed in geopolitics and has been held up by issues surrounding piracy, is coming close to a resolution.

“There is confidence that this significant move on behalf of the authorities shows willing to address piracy issues.

“The Premier League could even grant approval in the early part of this week, setting the wheels in motion for the final stage of the takeover. An official announcement would follow.”

We’re in the 12th week of proceedings with the top-flight holding all the keys to the deal as they have been conducting their owners and directors test throughout the same timeframe.

Douglas claims that this week’s Saudi move to combat piracy has helped matters and could mean there’s a very encouraging resolution inbound.

Alan Shearer was brought the club straight after Euro 96 for a record-breaking £15m deal.

If he’s correct, then we could finally be taken over after what has been a thoroughly arduous process and following Sunday’s emphatic victory, it would certainly be a statement to the rest of the division.

The Magpies are back.
