Hope: Benitez’s latest comment on Newcastle future is encouraging for the club – opinion

|

We all want Rafa Benitez to sign fresh terms at Newcastle. That much is obvious. However, thus far, we’ve been left waiting for some good news on the topic.

That has come this week, as per the Chronicle, with the club apparently delivering a written contract offer to Benitez. This is, of course, good news, but perhaps more interesting at this stage is his latest comment on the matter.

Asked about the prospect of discussing a new deal, Rafa simply said: “We have plenty of time, yes.”

As the Chronicle notes, this is encouraging as it’s clear that Benitez isn’t shutting the door on signing on long-term, and at this stage, that’s all we can ask for.

A written contract offer means little if he has no intention of signing on, but Benitez clearly is willing to have conversations with the club – just not yet. Of course, he’s probably looking for the club to ensure their position in the Premier League first, whilst, naturally, he’d be foolish to agree terms unless Ashley gives him what he wants.

Still, at this stage, Benitez could easily say that he wants to wait until the end of the season or publicly request that Ashley meeds his demands. He’s not, though. He’s eager to keep it behind the scenes, and he’s evidently happy to have a conversation. And what’s what we need at this point.

We completely understand his hesitancy. Make no mistake, he has all the power in this situation, and he’s right to make the most of that.

We’re starting to feel far more confident that the Spaniard will stay, though, as all signs are pointing towards him being open to that prospect.
