The Premier League have issued a statement giving clubs an update as to what is going to happen during this weekend’s fixtures.
This weekend sees the return of Premier League games after last week’s round of fixtures was postponed following the death of The Queen.
A minute’s silence is set to be observed before kick-off, followed by a rendition of God Save The King. There is also to be a minute’s applause on 70 minutes commemorating Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the Throne.
The official statement said:
Honouring Her Majesty
Fans will be asked to join a minute’s silence, which will be followed by the National Anthem, God Save The King.
Big screens and LED perimeter boards will display tribute images to Her Majesty and flags at the grounds will be flying at half-mast.
When the clock turns to 70 minutes, fans will be invited to applaud The Queen’s 70-year reign.
This of course applies to Newcastle’s fixture against Bournemouth on Saturday at 3pm at St James’ Park. There are several other fixtures going ahead this weekend while a few have been postponed again due to issues with police numbers.
Hopefully the Toon Army and the travelling Cherries fans will do us proud and impeccably observe the silence, especially after how much backlash there was against Liverpool after a few voices were heard during the moment’s silence before the game against Ajax last night.
We are already under the media spotlight and a target for a lot of opposition fans, so let’s not give them the ammo they need to start dragging us over the coals again. Even if you’re not a Royalist, do it for the Toon Army!
