Loads of Newcastle United fans have been reacting on social media after the Chronicle claimed that Matty Longstaff’s future at St. James’ Park is now hanging in the balance.

Longstaff is said to have been offered a contract by an ‘ambitious European club’, who would like to see the youngster join them in July once his Magpies deal has expired.

Neither Italian giants Inter Milan nor French heavyweights Olympique de Marseille are believed to be the club behind the firm interest, despite reports claiming interest from the San Siro in January and from the Orange Velodrome last month.

There had been positive noises coming out of St. James’ Park that Longstaff – and brother Sean – would pen a new deal with the club before the season is over, though some club figures are now growing somewhat concerned by the lack of progress.

Yet there are no in-person negotiations expected in the next week or two, while the club are yet to offer Longstaff a counter-proposal to the offer lodged by the unnamed outfit quietly going about their business.

Will Longstaff be at St. James' Park next season?

Yes

No

The 19-year-old, who has made seven Premier League appearances this season, is in the final months of his £850-per-week deal and would be available for a compensation fee of just £400,000 this summer if no agreement can be reached between his representatives from Beswicks Sports Ltd and the club.

Newcastle are said to have offered Longstaff a contract above what the club would normally offer someone of his age, but the terms did not match what his agent believed he is worth.
