Loads of Newcastle United fans have been reacting on social media after the Chronicle claimed that Matty Longstaff’s future at St. James’ Park is now hanging in the balance.
Longstaff is said to have been offered a contract by an ‘ambitious European club’, who would like to see the youngster join them in July once his Magpies deal has expired.
Neither Italian giants Inter Milan nor French heavyweights Olympique de Marseille are believed to be the club behind the firm interest, despite reports claiming interest from the San Siro in January and from the Orange Velodrome last month.
There had been positive noises coming out of St. James’ Park that Longstaff – and brother Sean – would pen a new deal with the club before the season is over, though some club figures are now growing somewhat concerned by the lack of progress.
Yet there are no in-person negotiations expected in the next week or two, while the club are yet to offer Longstaff a counter-proposal to the offer lodged by the unnamed outfit quietly going about their business.
Will Longstaff be at St. James' Park next season?
Yes
No
The 19-year-old, who has made seven Premier League appearances this season, is in the final months of his £850-per-week deal and would be available for a compensation fee of just £400,000 this summer if no agreement can be reached between his representatives from Beswicks Sports Ltd and the club.
Newcastle are said to have offered Longstaff a contract above what the club would normally offer someone of his age, but the terms did not match what his agent believed he is worth.
Here are some of the messages shared as fans reacted to the Chronicle’s demoralising report…
Controversial opinion here like but personally don’t think either of the brothers will amount to much anyway. Just a personal opinion

Why doesn’t this surprise me?

The club will be playing on the fact he’s a Geordie and will be expecting him to sign any contract they give him, this is NUFC under Ashley a complete shambles from top to bottom!!#ASHLEYOUT

He has an offer from NUFC worth £3.5m but has a greedy agent.

I would much rather see a geordie lad with potential went away and got the proper developing and coaching needed to become a good player, than stay and stagnate in this pit of lies, deceit, misery and mediocrity.

Has anyone thought that maybe he wants to go? Rather than we won’t give him what he wants!

Good luck to Matty. He’d be better off with less Mike Ashley in his life #NUFC
— Dean Burns (@deanoburns) March 1, 2020
🤦♂️ It would be just like #nufc to lose on their most promising talents for years to someone like a Dortmund & Matty goes on to become a player so good we’d never be able to sign him! This regime is rotten to the core & sooner we’re rid the better!

I don’t understand the links to such clubs. The lad has potential. But he’s hardly played to warrant such big links I feel.
