Benitez may have to approve huge Newcastle sale to fund January spree

|

Newcastle United have struggled significantly since the start of the season and are still awaiting a first victory in 2018-19, having picked up just two points from their opening 10 matches of the Premier League campaign.

Currrently sat rock-bottom of the division alongside Huddersfield, above the Terriers on only goal difference, the need for January reinforcements is obvious but there is concern that Mike Ashley could pinch the pennies once again.

The Magpies have scored just six times this season and a new striker is desperately needed along with a creative attacking midfielder – but Rafael Benitez may not have the funds he needs unless he approves a major sale.

Captain Jamaal Lascelles continues to attract the interest of Chelsea, according to The Chronicleand a sale should be considered to provide money for Benitez to spend in other areas – despite the fact it would be a controversial decision.

With Florian Lejuene, Federico Fernandez and Fabian Schar to choose from in defence, as well as Ciaran Clark, Lascelles can certainly be considered to be expendable and it would be bizarre to turn down a hefty off if Chelsea come in with a high offer.

Anything above £20m would be a significant amount for a club who have not spent above that figure in their history despite the rising prices of football in modern years, so it could be enough to get necessary additions across the line.
