Anthony Gordon Is Officially A Magpie

|

We knew it had happened, we’d seen the photos of him signing, the candid snap of him walking off the pitch at St James’ Park and the pic of him leaving the ground, but now we have the official word from the club – Anthony Gordon has signed for Newcastle United.

The fee is believed to be £40m plus a further £5m in add-ons. He, therefore, becomes the second most expensive signing in the club’s history behind Alexander Isak.

It’s great to see that since it looked nailed on, even the doubters are getting behind the lad, or at least coming to terms with the idea that Eddie Howe knows what he’s doing.

Gordon is capable of playing across the front three and possesses lightning pace. He has been recorded with the second-fastest sprint in the Premier League this season. However, it is his end product that has been questioned by the Toffees fans. He has been accused of running down blind alleys and tripping over at the slightest contact – something Newcastle fans are all too aware of following his antics against us last season.

My podcast co-host, Everton fan, Liam, has said to me that one thing that is telling about this transfer is how little reaction there has been from Everton fans, other than relief that he’s gone.

While I can totally see the negative side of this transfer, I get why Everton fans are happy, I get why some Newcastle fans are upset, but I have absolute faith in Eddie Howe and I’m sticking by the fact that at 21, there’s plenty of time for Gordon to mature on and off the pitch. I think he’s going to surprise a lot of people. It might not be immediate, but one day we’ll all be eating our words.

Or one day, I’ll be eating those words. Either way, I’m in for a word feast.

The Vital Football Podcast was live on Tuesday night, see my reactions to Joelinton’s disallowed goal at Southampton as it happened and watch as our resident Evertonian struggles to come to terms with what’s going on at Goodison Park.
