‘Actually looks fairly decent’ – Some Newcastle fans react to St James’ Park update

A selection of Newcastle supporters have been reacting on social media to an update on the work being undertaken to renovate the exterior of St James’ Park ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

As well as players and managers coming and going from Tyneside, the entrance to the Players Entrance under the Old Milburn Stand received a facelift, with the steps leading into the building now carrying a message reading: “We are ready, we are Newcastle, we are United.”

Fans were also quick to note the addition of black paint on the brickwork leading up to the turnstiles outside of the ground, although some supporters who reacted to early images of the alteration were not initially impressed.

One Toon fan dubbed the addition of black paint as a symbol of the dark days we face going into a new top-flight campaign without both of our leading goalscorers from 2018/19, while another suggested it was black to match Mike Ashley’s heart.

An update from the ground, however, has received mixed replies, with fans not as taken back by the paintwork as they were at first.

Black paint can now be seen stretching around the ground-level entrance to the Milburn Stand and leading up the stairway toward the turnstiles, while “Newcastle United” is written on the wall alongside the club’s badge behind the Sir Bobby Robson statue.

Here’s how these fans have been reacting to the updated look at St James’ Park…
