Newcastle fans have been reacting on social media after former England international Danny Mills said the fans are unrealistic.
Talking to Alan Brazil on talkSPORT’s Sports Breakfast show he said: “The fans expectations for the club are completely at the other end of the spectrum of what the owner wants.
“The Newcastle supporters are fanatical, but that does not give them a divine right to be in the top-six.
“The Newcastle fans’ expectations are a little bit too high, it has been a long long time since they were challenging for things.”
Before Steve Bruce was officially confirmed as manager by the club, Mills said he would be a safe appointment and is probably what they need.
It is a strange position that the fans find themselves in, many of them are against Bruce taking over at St James’ Park, yet they are renowned for celebrating ‘own of their own.’ Sir Bobby Robson was welcomed to the club with open arms, it would be safe to say Bruce will not.
It was always going to be difficult taking on the reins after Rafa Benitez. But living up to fans’ expectations now looks like an even more challenging task, given their anger and disappointment with the club.
Some Newcastle fans took to Twitter to share their views on Mills’ comments…
“Bruce is a safe appointment and is probably what they need.” ????
“The fans are fanatical but that doesn’t give you divine right to be in the top 6.”
“The fans’ expectations are a bit too high because of their history.”

everytime you get someone who has no affiliation to #nufc they spout the rubbish about us wanting a top 6 finish! It’s absolutely ridiculous!!
— The Pride of Shields (@scott_nufc) July 17, 2019
I’ve never heard a fan say we deserve to be or have a right to be in the top 6. We just want the club to at least attempt to progress, and the likes of Danny mills banging on doesn’t change that. Why doesn’t Danny come to Newcastle n meet some people, he will soon see he’s wrong.

Danny Mills has just proven how little he knows about Newcastle and the fans. I think he’s a poor choice for @talkSPORT if you don’t know don’t make a statement Danny lad #top6 ha ha just a bit of ambition from Mike would go a long way ????

Show me where NUFC fans think we have a divine right to be top 6 we are now used to the constant lack of ambition at our club and all we want is a club that tries to be the best it can not just exist as a advertisement for a chatty empire!! So wrong on every level that statement

Nobody is talking about a “divine right”. You speak to any real Newcastle fan rather than the toothless crones you interview for reaction and they will tell you all we want is to at least try to be competitive. We are not small in terms of finance, we should be trying ????♂️

Nope, we just don’t want an absolute embarrassment of an owner, a liar with a proven track record of deceit who is happy to systematically asset strip and destroy the club whilst treating hard working loyal customers with complete disregard
— Jimmy (@Jimmy_R7) July 17, 2019
You know nothing about our club or fans.

It’s almost like he’s going out of his way to miss the point. This comment has nothing to do with how #nufcfans feel. For those at the back still not listening, we just want to compete, that’s it. @talkSPORT
