Newcastle United and Sunderland are separated by two divisions these days and it has been years since the last top-flight derby between the two clubs but the rivalry between the pair remains as fierce as ever.

Magpies fans have enjoyed celebrating Sunderland’s misery in recent seasons after the Black Cats suffered back-to-back relegations, now competing in League One, but the joy has been difficult to find this term as their side suffers.

That has turned things on their head as Sunderland fans, seeing their side fight for promotion, believe a Tyne-Wear derby in the Championship could be on the cards next season – but they believe their rivals should have more hobbies on their hands.

An image went viral from the Stadium of Light this week that showed a Newcastle supporter volunteering at the club, wearing a black and white striped shirt, which caused a reaction on social media.

We have gathered some of the best responses below.

  • I remember the time when North East football supporters watched Sunderland & Newcastle on alternate weeks if they could not afford to travel to away games with their first choice team.
Friendly rivalry & banter are great but inter-club hatred should be left to morally deprived areas such as London & Manchester. So I salute the lass who turned up to help change our seats wearing her black & white shirt and those who turn up to our home matches similarly dressed… and, yes, I hope to watch derby matches with Newcastle next season!
