Many Newcastle United fans have had their say on Twitter after Michael Owen shed some more light on his move to Tyneside.
The former Ballon d’Or winner hasn’t exactly said the most positive things about the club in his later years as a pundit – and they haven’t got much better while speaking to Jamie Carragher on his ‘The Greatest Game’ podcast.
While on the podcast, Owen reaffirmed his stance about never really wanting to join the club in the first place, and said that he only did so that he could eventually get a move back to Liverpool.
The Chronicle posted the transcript of the conversation on the podcast, which you can read here.
Owen reveals that he was told by Real Madrid chiefs that the club had an offer from Newcastle, but he told them that he only had eyes on a return to Anfield.
Eventually, it was agreed that a move could happen with a clause that he could return to Liverpool if he pleased. He went onto add that it was that clause that pushed the move, stating ” it could have been anyone: Nottingham Forest, Hull, Birmingham, any team, but I wanted to go back to Liverpool end of story, no matter what”.
Is Dubravka the best goalkeeper outside the top-six clubs?
Yes
No
Unsurprisingly, following his beef with Alan Shearer over a similar issue, he hasn’t exactly endeared himself to fans any further.
The Chronicle’s twitter page tweeted about the story, to which many fans shared their views, which you can read below…
Or he could have been grateful for the easiest £24m anyone ever earned ( which he used to buy a stud farm ).

Nobody is remotely interested about his time here or him. Desperate to stay current.

Stop giving him an outlet. His football career finished a long time ago, he’s a terrible pundit/commentator – we should never hear about or from this bloke again.

The move didn’t quite work out for Owen at Newcastle, but in fairness to him, his goal record is still one the club would love now.
30 goals in 79 games was hardly the best record he has as a player, but it’s still one the club could do with now.
