Newcastle had several stand-out players in the 1990s but one who perhaps gets overlooked is Steve Watson, who now manages York City.
The former defender celebrated his 46th birthday on Wednesday and he was met with a number of well wishes from Magpies’ supporters.
Many also used the occasion to speak highly of him as a player, suggesting he was underrated in his spell at St. James Park, and considering he helped the side finish 2nd in 1996/97 they probably have a point.
Do you think the club will be taken over?
Yes
No
On Sunday he spoke to talkSPORT about the famous 5-0 win over Manchester United, a game in which he completed the 90 minutes, as he did regularly that season with 36 appearances in the Premier League.
Watson later played for Aston Villa and Everton but did feature for us on an impressive 176 occasions, leading one supporter to claim that he was wrongly sold.
Newcastle’s decline in the years after his departure suggests that is true, though it is good to look back on better times regardless.
