Former Newcastle United defender Peter Ramage is keen to return to the club and become our new Under 23s head coach, according to the Chronicle.

Ramage is said to have thrown his hat into the ring to replace Neil Redfearn in the position, after the 54-year-old walked out on the Magpies in November following a complaint by assistant Liam Bramley.

The pair had not been seeing eye-to-eye at Little Benton, forcing Head of Academy Coaching Ben Dawson to intervene and hold a clear-the-air meeting, but was unable to find a solution that eased tensions in the youth set-up.

Redfearn took the decision to walk out on the club four months after his appointment, with the former Leeds United boss hired in June 2019 alongside Dawson.

Ramage is now keen to make a return to Newcastle and serve as our fourth U23s head coach in the past two years, in what would be a first managerial role for the Magpies academy product.

Would you give Ramage his first managerial role?

The 36-year-old graduated from the youth set-up at United in 2005 and would make 68 appearances for the club across all competitions, including outings during our 2004/05 and ’06/07 UEFA Cup campaigns.

He was sold to Queens Park Rangers in 2008 and went on to represent Crystal Palace, Birmingham City, Barnsley, Coventry and Leyton Orient, plus spells in India with Kerala Blasters FC and America with Phoenix Rising FC (formerly known as Arizona United) before retiring in 2017.

Ramage would work under Dawson and alongside former Toon teammate Steve Harper if he is successful in his application to replace Redfearn, after Harper returned to the club in November as a first-team coach.

In other Newcastle United news, the club have been given little encouragement in moves to sign Steve Bruce’s £50m target.
