Rafael Benitez’s contract at Newcastle expires at the end of the season, and that’s left fans sweating on his long-term future. Of course, losing the Spaniard would be a huge blow for the club, yet at present, that’s what is on course to happen.

Fans have, as a result, likely been left waiting nervously for any information on the manager’s future, and today, they finally got some. However, in very cryptic Benitez fashion, he isn’t giving much away.

As per the Chronicle, he said: “I understand why they want to know, but they know my plan is that the team is focused on football. We can get the results then we can talk about anything.”

Whilst, of course, Benitez isn’t giving a definite time for discussions, he does seem to be implying that once relegation is off the table, he’ll be open to discussing things with the club. This is good, too, as it means that he is at least open to discussions at the correct point.

Naturally, he’s looking to avoid any distractions, and that’s a great approach, and at least this means that talks may well happen before the end of the season, at least.

We’re still only 6 points above the drop, but we’ve been in good form lately, so hopefully, we can ensure safety sooner, rather than later. The sooner we secure safety, the sooner Benitez holds talks – it’s that simple.

  • Rafa has and will always want to stay, but only if those above him share his ambitions, vision and actual worth of the club now and what it could be worth in a few years time with investment
