PL fan questions Benitez signing, many Newcastle fans react: ‘Think Bale before he was moulded’

Many Newcastle supporters have been reacting on social media after a Tottenham Hotspur supporter questioned whether Miguel Almiron had actually been a worthwhile signing for us, as he failed to score or assist a single goal before getting injured.

That may be true, in that he failed to officially register any involvement in one of our goals following his club record £20million move from Major League Soccer franchise Atlanta United in January, but the 25-year-old did record 13 key passes in his 10 Premier League appearances.

Almiron also played 241 passes in total during his 763 minutes of top-flight English football, with only an average seven per ninety minutes failing to find someone else representing the Magpies.

Our Paraguayan midfielder also only attempted 2.2 shots a game, with 1.4 of which coming from outside the box.

He only lost possession via unsuccessful touches 2.6 times a game, as well, and was dispossessed by the opposition just 0.7 times a match, while attempting 1.7 dribbles, of which 0.8 were successful.

Compared to some of his teammates, only Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Ritchie bettered Almiron for key passes by minutes, as the English central mid averaged a key pass every 37.8 minutes, the Scot recorded one every 49 minutes, and the winter arrival penned one every 58.7 minutes. Ayoze Perez, meanwhile, ranked fourth with one every 65.1 minutes.

Almiron’s stats also came before he saw his inaugural Premier League campaign brought to a halt with a season-ending hamstring strain, which he thankfully appears to have shaken off by taking part in full training with Paraguay ahead of the Copa America, which begins on June 16 against Qatar.

So when the Spurs fan asked the St James’ Park faithful to describe Almiron’s season, here’s how some reacted…
