Plenty of Newcastle United fans have been heaping praise on Joey Barton after reflecting on his time on Tyneside.

The Fleetwood Town manager was renowned as a pantomime villain as a player and spent four years with us following his £5.8m move from Manchester City in 2007.

The 37-year-old scored eight goals and provided 16 assists from 84 appearances for Newcastle. Surprisingly, he only picked up one red card for us before he joined Queens Park Rangers in 2011.

Barton recently posted on Twitter about how good his time was with us, but some Mike Ashley moments stopped the team from flourishing, which the fans applauded.

With this in mind, supporters were complimentary about Barton’s time at St James’ Park and made their feelings clear on social media. One fan said that he was one of his “favourite ever Newcastle players”, while another described him as a “bit nutty” but a good player nevertheless.
