Saudi Arabia have just pulled off one of the biggest shocks in world football beating Argentina 2-1 in the group stages of the World Cup.
Argentina who were 36 games unbeaten going into the tournament and were one of the favourites to lift the trophy, simply couldn’t cope with the KSA fight. The Saudi defence put their bodies on the line to protect their lead and simply bullied Argentina into submission.
The celebrations at the final whistle were like those seen at the full-time whistle in the final. The mood in Saudi Arabia must be amazing right now, soooooo …….. time to give our overlords a ring and see if they fancy throwing a bit extra money at us.
Surely we can convince the PIF that if we had more money in January we could build a team that could replicate that same feeling again in May. It has to be worth a shot, surely?
Let’s get them to sign a blank cheque and go get Maddison and Diaby in January, and anybody else we may need. Maybe even the Saudi goalkeeper who was outstanding today. He loved a Weetabix save, as my old headmaster used to call them.
After that result, I worry that the heads of Miguel Delaney and Ollie Holt will have exploded. A Saudi Arabia team won a game in the Qatar World Cup. It will just be too much for them to handle.
Meanwhile, the next proper Newcastle-related World Cup game is this evening as Garang Kuol’s Australia get their World Cup underway against France at 7pm.
