The Athletic have been keeping an eye on England’s training camp and have noted that Callum Wilson and James Maddison did not take part in the outdoor training session with the rest of the non-starters from yesterday’s game.
Maddison hasn’t trained with the squad at all since jetting out to Qatar with England due to the injury he picked up in the last Premier League game. It is as yet unclear what the potential issue is with Wilson, although it’s believed he’s been put on a different training programme to the rest of the squad.
The official England Twitter would go on to tweet: “There are 13 players involved in today’s session, with @CallumWilson joining the 11 who started yesterday’s game working inside, while @Madders10 continues his rehabilitation indoors.”
Wilson of course made his World Cup debut yesterday coming on as a substitute, replacing Harry Kane who looked to be carrying a knock as he came off, although he’s since been declared fully fit. It wasn’t just a cameo for Wilson either as he managed to get himself into the record books with an assist, setting up Jack Grealish after unselfishly squaring the ball when he could have had a shot after going one-on-one with the Iranian goalkeeper.
England’s 6-2 demolition of Iran, which was partially captained by our own Kieran Trippier following Kane’s substitution, sees them stop the group by two points after Wales could only draw with the USA.
Friday sees the England side in action again against the USA in a 7pm kick off. Kieran Trippier will likely be in the starting line-up again after a solid performance yesterday. Hopefully, Callum Wilson will be back in contention by then too.
