Newcastle United v Leicester City – Match Report

|

Newcastle United hosted the Carabao Cup quarter-final with Leicester City tonight at St James’ Park under the lights.

The magpies once again outfoxed Brendan Rodger’s Leicester side less than a month after their 3-0 win at the King Power. This time we were made to wait for our goals, but they were definitely worth the wait.

I was otherwise engaged during the match doing Podcast type things, but I was able to keep one eye on proceedings as Newcastle seemingly dominated the game with Bruno Guimaraes coming agonisingly close to getting the opener for the Magpies after fizzing a long-range effort just wide of the mark.

Callum Wilson had a chance blocked by Wout Faes when it looked an almost certain goal. It was clear that if anyone was going to make the breakthrough it was going to be the home side, it was just a case of when.

Then cometh the hour, cometh the man as local lad Dan Burn netted his first goal for the club on 60 minutes. Bursting into the box from the left wing, he cut inside and placed a fantastic right footed strike into the bottom corner. What he was doing so far forward, or who has been giving him finishing lessons we may never know, but it was a stunning way to open his account, and in such an important game too.

Twelve minutes later, Newcastle doubled their lead when Joelinton latched onto a through ball and recreated Dan Burn’s goal sending St James’ Park into raptures.

Newcastle overcame a barrage at the end of the game with senior citizen, Jamie Vardy coming close a couple of times, but Nick Pope and Co’s run of clean sheets continued and Newcastle find themselves in the hat for a semi-final cup draw. Perfect stuff.
