Newcastle Kids Beat La Liga Opposition

|

Yesterday, Newcastle Under 21’s got their pre-season off to a flyer with a 2-1 win over La Liga outfit, Elche CF.

The Under 21s are in Spain for their summer training camp while work is carried out on the training facilities at home. The tour included a friendly against top opposition and the Geordie boys were not intimidated at all. A match report can be found on the Official Site.

Michael Ndiweni, who only just signed his first professional contract earlier this month, opened the scoring in the second half. Enzo Roco pulled the Spanish side level before Joe White put the game to bed in the closing stages.

Elche CF finished 13th in La Liga last season and even held Real Madrid to a 2-2 draw in January. The confidence the youngsters can take away from this victory should set them up nicely for the upcoming season.

Do Pre-Season Results Matter?

No - It's about fitness

Yes - They build confidence.

It already seems like the Dan Ashworth effect is kicking in with the senior team and the Under 21s having impressive pre-season friendly results already.

The senior side face Mainz 05 on Monday which will be their first true test of the pre-season following on from two victories against “easier” opposition. That game can also be seen on NUFC.co.uk – Kick off is at 3pm BST.
