Newcastle Brush Aside 1860 Munich

|

Newcastle racked up their second win of pre-season with a 3-0 victory over German side 1860 Munich in Austria.

Goals from Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimaraes ensured Newcastle built upon their 5-1 win over Gateshead last week and now they look forward to another clash in Austria on Monday against Mainz 05.

The first half was a very scrappy affair with Newcastle having some good possession in the opening minutes but slowly falling off the pace as the game descended into a whole lot of nothing. The only really noteworthy moment was a yellow card for Jamaal Lascelles for persistent fouling, In fact, Lascelles’ performance will be giving Eddie Howe some food for thought as he struggled against sub-par competition.

Lascelles was brought off at halftime and replaced by new signing, Sven Botman who looked a lot more assured than his predecessor, winning aerial duels with ease. A move that started with Botman lead to the first goal as he played the ball out of defence down the wing to Jonjo Shelvey who played an inviting ball into the box for Willock to slot home.

Wholesale were made by Eddie Howe on the hour mark as ten substitutions came on and totally changed the pace of the game. Suddenly Newcastle looked a lot more threatening with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Ryan Fraser on the pitch. We also got a look at Botman and Schar together which looks like it could be the first choice pairing going forward.

Newcastle were soon 2-0 up after a clever ball from Bruno Guimaraes found Sean Longstaff 12 yards out from goal who fired in a rocket of a shot past the 1860 Munich ‘keeper.

Bruno popped up again to complete the scoring after winning the ball from Verlaat and laying it off for Chris Wood who returned the favour for Guimaraes to stroke the ball home.
