Newcastle Walk Away From £67m Deal

|

Newcastle have given up on signing Alexander Isak according to The Telegraph.

It’s believed that Isak would want £200,000 a week to make the switch, which is almost double the wage cap at Newcastle.

Fans have been discussing the pros and cons of the strict wage cap in place at Newcastle and this will certainly skew the data as this isn’t the first deal to come a cropper of the wage cap. Moussa Diaby is another deal that’s unlikely to happen; even if Newcastle were to meet Leverkusen’s valuation, they’d likely come up against a request for wages over the £120k cap.

Do We Need To Address The Wage Structure?

Yes - It's the only way to move upwards

No - We need to stand firm

While it’s great that the board are not going to be bullied into spending money they don’t feel they need to, it’s quickly becoming apparent that digging their heels in isn’t always going to be the best play. There are players out there whose wage demands eclipse our current cap, and if we are serious about challenging for European places, we have to break that structure to land the types of players who will get us there.

This doesn’t mean that we have to be taken for a ride by every club and player we look to deal with, but we definitely need to make exceptions to run with the big boys, that’s just the reality of the way the game is now.
