Newcastle And Man Utd Battle for Nunez

|

The consistent links with Darwin Nunez continue to come thick and fast, with the latest coming in the form of Uruguayan journalist, Sebas Giovanelli claiming that both Newcastle United and Manchester United have made bids for the Benfica striker. (via Sports Witness)

With so many clubs supposedly interested in Nunez. it seems odd that the two clubs leading the way are Newcastle and Manchester United given the fact that neither can offer Nunez Champions League football next season, something it is believed will be a big influence on where he ends up next term.

It’s not known how much each club has bid, or even if the bids match, but Benfica are adamant that it will take €100m to prise the 22 year old from Lisbon. We know that Newcastle could afford that amount, but whether they are actually ready to swim in those waters so early into the project is unknown. Man U, on the other hand, are likely to move on Paul Pogba in the close season which will bolster their spending power.

If there is any truth in this rumour it would be extremely interesting to see how things evolve (get it? Darwin … evolution) – Newcastle may not have the history of Manchester United, but that’s exactly what this is now … history. Man United haven’t even been a shadow of their former selves since Sir Alex Ferguson departed. They’re now putting their faith in Eric Ten Hag, a manager with zero Premier League experience. So would Nunez fancy stepping into a club on a downward trajectory, still experimenting with ideas to rekindle their glory days, or would he rather join a club on the up with exciting new ownership, a young, talented manager and a fan base that puts others to shame?

We shall see.
