Meet the fan- My road to the Toon

|

Unlike many, my road to Newcastle is a long and circuitous route began many, many, many years ago while living in Germany.

A good friend and his family introduced me to Premiership football as they were a supporter of Liverpool. Those were the days of Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Pepe Reina, and the big Finn Sami Hyypiä. I spent many a night watching Liverpool win and lose but all the while enjoying the friendship and camaraderie of my Scouser comrades  (I was made an honorary Scouser at the time as I am American). Years went by and I continued following Liverpool through the exit of Rafa Benitez and the arrival of Luiz Suarez. Years went by and my journey with Liverpool waned, but fate, and photography were on the horizon.

As an administrator to a Facebook camera group, a Magpie and TOON FANATIC  joined the group and a friendship developed instantly. Through photos and talk, I was introduced to “CHURCH” in a magical place known as  the Toon, home of the Magpies.

Fate is a curious thing and talk of visiting the “church” had been on going for quite some time. COVID put a damper on travel and visiting the Toon and visiting the place where football worship is like no other. Finally in March 2022 the fateful day arrived where Liverpool and Newcastle would square off at the Toon. After arriving from Finland, I was greeted by my Geordie mate and handed  a bottle of Broon, or the “dog” and I knew immediately from the company and great banter that I had found a home.

Rushing into the stadium to see the banners of “Wor Flags”  unfurl was like something I have never experienced in my life. I still remember the chills and goosebumps from watching the banner come down and the electricity in the air. I was in the Toon, and in the midst of some of the greatest fans, friends, brothers and sisters in the world.

The Toon may have lost  the match, but the winner that day was definitely me, I can’t wait to get back next season and continue my love affair with the Toon and its lovely people.
