Magpies Looking To March On With Solly

|

Brighton’s Solly March is the latest player to be linked with a move to Tyneside it has been reported. The 28-year-old winger has been in tremendous form this season and recently scored an impressive brace in his team’s 3-0 win over Liverpool.

March has spent pretty much the entirety of his career with Brighton, making 235 appearances for the south coast club, and the former England Under 21 international has been a key part of his team’s impressive Premier League performance this season.

Now it seems that Toon boss, Eddie Howe, has his eye on the Brighton man as he looks to improve his squad for the critical second half of the season.

News that Newcastle have shown interest in bringing March to Tyneside was reported by transfer expert Graeme Bailey on the Talking Transfers Podcast.

“In terms of one of their homegrown talents, Solly March. He has 18 months left on his deal. He is arguably Roberto De Zerbi’s favourite player. He has gone up a level,” Bailey said.

“Brighton are aware of this, they know there is some interest. Dan Ashworth likes him at Newcastle, Eddie Howe loves him, he’s that sort of character isn’t he, he’s exactly the sort of player you could see under Eddie Howe. And he’s also on the radar of Gareth Southgate.”

Dan Ashworth worked with March when he was technical director at Brighton, so he will know all about his talents – something he will surely have discussed with Howe. Howe has made a point of signing players with a good, hard-working character since taking over at the club, and March seems to tick a lot of the boxes.

At 28, his age may be one stumbling block when it comes to a possible move, but Howe can point to the success of March’s former teammate, Dan Burn after he made the move to Newcastle at this stage last year at the age of 29.

Is this a transfer that is likely to happen or simply another false rumour? If I had to guess I would plump for the latter.
