Karius Puts Pen To Paper On New Deal

|

Loris Karius has signed an extension to stay at the club until the end of the 2022/23 season as expected.

That leaves a question mark hanging over the future of Karl Darlow who has been the subject of interest from Championship club, Huddersfield Town.

Karius’ extension means we now have five senior goalkeepers in the side, one of whom didn’t make the 25-man squad for the first half of the season and is unlikely to be added for the second half.

Mark Gillespie is yet to make a senior appearance for Newcastle since signing from Motherwell in 2020. The former Newcastle Academy who left the club at 16, returned two years ago and has found himself sidelined ever since.

However, it’s Karl Darlow who it is believed will be the one who leaves in this window. Now relegated to fourth choice, Darlow, whom The Athletic claims has not said he wants to leave, will no doubt jump at the chance of regular first-team football and with Huddersfield Town desperate for a ‘keeper following an injury to Lee Nicholls there’s a deal to be done.

The Athletic also believe that Martin Dubravka will be the number two choice ahead of Loris Karius, but given he is cup-tied in the Carabao Cup, we can expect to see Karius on the bench for the fixtures against Southampton.
