Jetro Willems is a popular man on Tyneside following a successful loan spell spent with the club and he will reportedly be available on a free transfer this summer.

The Dutchman’s loan was cut short due to a nasty injury that has kept him out of action ever since but that doesn’t change the way the Newcastle fan base sees him and a return for the full back would be greatly received.

Quick, direct and with skills in abundance; Jetro Willems was a shining light for United in the first half of the 2019-20 season. His link up with Allan Saint-Maximin was particularly pleasing to see and the pair seemed to bond well off the pitch as well.

The January window just gone saw plenty speculation that Willems would indeed be making his return to the North East but unfortunately nothing escalated and he remained a Frankfurt player.

Frankfurt are currently flying high in the Bundesliga as they look to book their ticket for next season’s UEFA Champions league and as such Willems has not been able to wrestle his way back into the side.

The only concern with any transfer for Willems would be his injuries. The anterior cruciate ligament injury that he picked up in our 1-0 dramatic win over Chelsea will put question marks over any move.

If you can get him on the pitch at a similar level to pre injury, it is an absolute no brainer. He offered another attacking outlet that our current left backs Jamal Lewis and Paul Dummett don’t.

Lewis has had a difficult season and is yet to really find his feet at the top level whilst Dummett is very defensive minded. He’s good at what he does but he’s hardly going to give any troubles to opposition defences which is now a big part of being a full back in the modern game.

This is a deal that should happen. Willems is liked by the fans and from his social media use, it seems that the feeling is very much mutual.
