Report: Newcastle ‘hopeful’ £20m bid will secure 11-goal forward

|

Newcastle United are ‘hopeful’ that a £20million bid will secure the services of Hull City forward Jarrod Bowen, according to Football Insider.

The Toon are working hard to land two late window deals that will improve those at head coach Steve Bruce’s disposal, having seen a bid accepted by Tottenham Hotspur for full-back Danny Rose.

United have agreed to pay £2million to secure the England international’s services until the end of the campaign, though do not currently have an option or obligation to purchase the 29-year-old.

Hope remains that Bowen will join Rose in being unveiled alongside Bruce this week, having allegedly lodged a formal offer on Wednesday that would be worth £20m including potential add-ons.

Bruce is a ‘massive fan’ of Bowen but had been prioritising the arrival of a replacement for the injured Paul Dummett and Jetro Willems, though the imminent arrival of Rose has clearly opened the door for a raid on the KCOM Stadium as well.

Is Bowen worth a potential £20m?

No

Hull had previously valued Bowen at £22m but reduced their valuation earlier in the week, as their original asking price had put sides off a deal with United only willing to pay an upfront instalment of £12m.

Whether the new approach features a higher base sum more attuned to Hull’s reduced asking price remains to be seen, but what is almost guaranteed with a move for Bowen is that he would add some extra firepower to a tame offence.

Joelinton’s sole goal back in August remains the only strike recorded by one of our recognised centre-forwards in the Premier League this season, while Allan Saint-Maximin (1) and Miguel Almiron (2) are Bruce’s only wide players to have found the net.

The fight for Bowen’s signature is not yet over, though, as Sky Sports have noted in their Transfer Centre feed (January 30, 15:15) that Crystal Palace are in talks with the Tigers over a £16m plus add-ons deal, and believe the Eagles are ‘close’ to reaching an agreement.

Reports by The Sun have also claimed that West Ham United are making urgent moves to hijack Roy Hodgson’s plans to welcome Bowen to Selhurst Park, but the Irons are only said to be offering £12m upfront with a further £5m in add-ons.

The Sun also claim that the Eagles’ offer is only worth around £10m plus add-ons, suggesting there is still a lot to come in the long-running saga of Bowen’s future ahead of Friday’s deadline.

Bowen is wildly sought after having been prolific in the Championship for Hull this season with 11 goals coming from the right-wing, where he would likely slot into Bruce’s plans if he were to move to St. James’ Park.

The Leominster-born star could also allow Bruce to field Almiron in a more central creative role, as the Paraguayan excelled through the middle with MLS franchise Atlanta United before his £21m move last January.

Bowen has also assisted twice from the wing, scored three times and assisted once as a centre-forward and fired two strikes and three assists in three games as a shadow striker this term.

In other Newcastle United news, the club are keen to sell a £40k-p/w and £30k-p/w player before Friday’s deadline.
