Lots of Newcastle United fans have been lauding the unsung heroes of the Toon’s past and present on social media.
Fans have offered a wide variety of names as to who have been the most underrated men to wear the famous Black and White kit over the years, ranging from the likes of current first-team aces Isaac Hayden and Paul Dummett to the likes of Darren Peacock, Nolberto Solano and Danny Guthrie.
Solano was a popular name among the St. James’ Park faithful members voicing their options, having left a long-lasting impression on them during his years on Tyneside.
The current Peru national team assistant manager joined United from Boca Juniors in 1998 and went on to make 296 appearances for the club between two spells, having left for Aston Villa in 2004 and returned two years later.
A move to West Ham in 2007 spelt the end for Solano as a Newcastle player, as he went on to represent AE Larisa, Universitario de Deportes, Leicester City, Hull City and Hartlepool United before retiring in 2012.
Solano made 10 outings in the Champions League with us during the 2002/03 season, scoring once, while playing four qualifying games for UEFA’s premier club competition across the 02/03 and 03/04 terms.
He also made 17 outings in the UEFA Cup while a Newcastle player, including playing in eight of our 10 ties on route to the Last 16 in 2006/07.
Here are some of the messages shared as fans offered up who they consider to be the most underrated player in Newcastle history…
Big fan of Clarence Acuña, Mark – he never gets mentioned but out in some great displays and weighed in with the odd goal. Plus dressed up as a pirate down the Quayside once…

If Darren Peacock had another proper centre half alongside him we’d have seen how good he actually was. As it was he spent 80% of his time covering for partners out of position and took stick for it! Class defender!

Solano. One of PLs underrated players. People used to rave about the way Beckham crossed a ball, Nobby was just as good imo

Danny Guthrie never let us down.

If Solano had played for Man Utd, Arsenal or Liverpool then we would hear his name mentioned in discussions about all-time Premier League XIs.

Danny Guthrie. One of the few we’ve had in the past 15 years who could cross a ball

Brian Kilkline – still for me, pound for pound, Keegan’s best signing

Not to open up a freshly closed wound but Ayoze Perez scored a ton of vital goals, played anywhere he needed to and never gave anything but 100%

Aaron Hughes

Currently Issac Hayden

Paul Dummett… you know he’s an easy 7/10 every single week before a ball is even kicked, absolutely rock solid at the back and always puts in 110%
