Plenty of Newcastle United fans have reacted on Twitter to update in the only competition which seems to be going ahead at the moment – Leyton Orient’s FIFA tournament.

While those words are something a football journalist would rarely expect to write, this tournament seems to be something which has genuinely got a few fans excited as they look to fill the Premier League void which is missing from their lives.

The Toon’s FA Cup Quarter Final looks in jeopardy due to the outbreak of coronavirus, but at least fans are still finding something to be positive about.

So far we’ve club’s Twitter accounts get involved with tic-tac-toe, connect four, but now a FIFA tournament is on the cards, with clubs from all over the globe getting involved.

Should this season's FA Cup be scrapped?

Yes

Yes

No

No

It started off by just requesting 64 teams, but it has now snowballed into a 128-team tournament, for which the draw was today.

Newcastle were dealt a virtual home draw, where they will be playing Gillingham. Obviously, if this was a real football tournament the Magpies would fancy their chances in the replay against League One competition, but we have no idea about how good Gillingham’s designated FIFA player is, so all is up for grabs.

Here is what some fans are saying about it below…

If you can’t have real football, have the next closest thing.

Also, if you’re in need of a bit of cheering up, take a look at the draw. It has everything from Stevenage vs Blackpool to Marseille vs Istanbul Basakeshir.

Representing the Magpies will be @PlanetToast1, who according to his own Twitter page, was the 24th ranked player on FIFA 19 in the UK – so hopefully we are in good hands.

So drink it in Toon supporters, as this could be our best chance of playing a European team in a long, long time.

Here’s to Newcastle having a chance of winning something.
