Newcastle intend to build on Joelinton’s transfer from TSG Hoffenheim with a further two or three new players in a record-breaking window, according to Off The Pitch.
The Brazilian’s club-record move from the Bundesliga was finalised on Tuesday, July 23, with the forward penning a six-year deal on Tyneside and being awarded the coveted number nine jersey.
Despite reports of the fee rising to £48million through add-ons, Off The Pitch claim the combined figure for Joelinton’s move will totalise at £35million – which is also less than the previous speculated base price of £36million.
The 22-year-old’s arrival still eclipses the £20million outlay handed to MLS franchise Atlanta United in January for Miguel Almiron, and is not expected to be the last of the funds released this summer.
It is believed Newcastle chiefs are open to splashing a further £70million if needed in their quest to replace Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez after the duo’s respective departures, and will focus on young players.
The potential combined transfer outlay of more than £100million would eclipse Newcastle’s previous record spend in a single window, as United’s splurge in the summer market of the 2015/16 season set the club back a speculated £62.29million – the Magpies spent a further reported £34.83m in the following January.
Head of Recruitment Steve Nickson has been on frequent scouting missions this summer searching for potential rising stars the club could target, although Steve Bruce is expected to have the final say on who is brought to Tyneside in the coming weeks.
Our new head coach will also be briefed on the club’s long-time targets in a similar way to how the board dealt with the potential acquisition of Joelinton, but he will be offered the chance to present his own targets at an upcoming meeting between himself and Nickson.
It is not claimed who Nickson intends to brief Bruce on, or who Bruce will put forward, but Newcastle have been linked with a range of players recently supported by either side.
OGC Nice forward Allan Saint-Maximin appears to be backed by the board more so than Bruce, as the former Sheffield Wednesday boss is believed to have doubts over the Frenchman after receiving reports on the player ahead of the club’s expected approach.
Burnley defender Ben Gibson, on the other hand, is thought to be a Bruce target the club have given their backing to, but will only make a move for the 26-year-old if the price is deemed suitable.
Everton duo Yannick Bolasie and James McCarthy are also reported targets of Bruce, with both valued at £10million by their parent side, while Rangers defender James Tavernier’s name has also been muted.
Here’s how these Newcastle fans have reacted to Off The Pitch’s claim that United could be set for a record-breaking end to the summer window…
It would put us in the same position we were in before the start of the summer but with a worse manager and significantly lower fan morale
Need 6 in 2 weeks at a minimum for an ok summer window transfer wise. Never mind reversing all the negativity. Talking 150mil+ for that ????????

So why didn’t they do that when they had a world class manager on board

2 or 3 players ???????????????? that’s massive that is…… why are we penny pinching on every player, apart from Joelinton, which we appear to be paying over the odds ????????♂️ #nufc

It’s funny because they all said this last week and said it would be done by the end of last week, then it was Monday, now it’s the middle of this week ???? we’re just going to keep moving it along until the window shuts and we’ve brought no one…

— Toon Stew (@toonarmyblog) July 22, 2019
