Darwin Nunez – The Rumour That Won’t Die

|

Darwin Nunez continues to be heavily linked with a move to Newcastle despite it being heavily believed that the Benfica striker would prefer a move to a club playing Champions League football next season.

An article on Sports Mole has claimed that the Magpies are willing to pay the €100m (£85m) asking price for Nunez who netted 32 times in 38 appearances last season, as well as adding four assists to his numbers. A return like that is exactly what Newcastle is missing with their first choice striker, Callum Wilson, proving to be too injury prone to rely on fully.

Despite Wilson missing the majority of the last season, he still topped the Toon scoring charts with six league goals which is a massive indicator that Newcastle are desperate for back-up in the striking department with £25m man, Chris Wood, failing to pick up the mantle in Wilson’s absence.

Nunez (22) is being chased by a number of clubs including Liverpool, Manchester United and Champions League winners, Real Madrid with the latter likely being Nunez’s preferred destination as he’d been awaiting the outcome of the Champions League final before deciding his future.

Whether Newcastle can turn the Uruguayan’s head and persuade him to forego Champions League football next season to come and be a part of the Toon Revolution remains to be seen, but they certainly have their work cut out for them. It will be worth seeing if Dan Ashworth were to take up his role next week as expected, whether he will be despatched to Portugal to try and broker the deal.
