Newcastle, most certainly, dropped two points as they could only draw 1-1 against the relegation-strugglers Aston Villa on Wednesday.
It took until the second half for the Magpies to break the deadlock. Dwight Gayle came off the bench to score just three minutes after being substituted on by manager Steve Bruce.
However, a mix-up between midfielder Jonjo Shelvey and goalkeeper Martin Dubravka gifted Ahmed El-Mohamady an all-important equaliser for the Villans’ quest to stay in the Premier League.
The result meant that Newcastle stayed in 13th place but are well clear of the drop zone.
Chronicle Live journalist Andrew Musgrove gave his thoughts on the affair and concluded that Steve Bruce’s side are all but safe.
Tough watch that but positives to take include Dwight Gayle getting a goal.
Villa should really have had all three points here – imo, #NUFC lucky for a point.
But a point they have, and you’d say they’re probably safe for another season now.

It is difficult to disagree with what Musgrove said. Newcastle were so close to securing all three points but individual errors cost them dearly.
But as they sit 12 points ahead of West Ham United and Bournemouth, who are both level on points in 17th, it would have to take a calamitous collapse of their campaign for them to slip down into the Championship.
Will Newcastle finish in the top 10 this season?
Yes
No
Of course, there are concerns in terms of finishing their chances and defensive responsibilities. But receiving mathematical confirmation of safety can direct the focus on more important issues.
