Some Newcastle supporters have been reacting on Reddit after Ayoze Perez was nominated for the Premier League’s April Player of the March award.
The 5 ft 8 Spaniard had a stunning April for the Magpies, as he stretched his top-flight goal tally to eleven, having scored our last five goals, including a hat-trick against Southampton which secured our safety for another year.
His strike against Leicester also ensured we left the King Power Stadium with all three points, while his effort on the road at Brighton put us ahead, only for the Seagulls to equalise once he left the field of play with a hip injury.
Competition for the award will be difficult for Perez to overcome, however, with Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Liverpool duo Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah also in contention. As are Manchester City starlet Aymeric Laporte, Southampton’s record-breaking Shane Long, the Foxes’ Jamie Vardy and Burnley’s Chris Wood.
None of the aforementioned players managed to score more goals than Perez in April – with Vardy also netting five – while Salah struck four and created one, compared to Hazard who scored thrice and assisted twice.
Meanwhile, although Long managed to score the fastest goal of the Premier League era against Watford, the Irishman only managed to aid the Saints efforts enough to secure one win and two draws last month, and was a late substitute in the south coast native’s defeat at St James’ Park.
