Lots of Newcastle United fans have been reacting on social media after the club shared that Miguel Almiron had scored the winning goal for Paraguay against Bulgaria on Thursday.
Almiron had missed Paraguay’s last international fixture against Slovakia after being sent off away to Serbia in October, when the 25-year-old was issued a second yellow card for simulation.
He returned to Eduardo Berizzo’s squad on Thursday as Paraguay travelled to Bulgaria for an international friendly, and would score the only goal of the tie 23 minutes after the break to hand La Albirroja their first win since before this summer’s Copa America.
Almiron received possession just inside the Bulgaria penalty area after Richard Sanchez worked the ball across the box, from where the Toon midfielder looked up, realised he had time, and unleashed a curling effort into the near corner of Georgi Georgiev’s net.
As well as handing Paraguay the win, Almiron’s goal was his first for his country in what was our former club-record purchases’ 23rd appearance on the international stage.
It was also Almiron’s first goal of 2019, having last found the back of the net before his £21million transfer from MLS franchise Atlanta United.
What is Almiron's best position?
Right wing
Central
Left wing
Almiron had scored 13 times and assisted 13 goals for Atlanta in 2018 before moving to Tyneside, where he is yet to score or assist in any competition.
He has attempted a combined 40 shots and played 20 key passes in Black and White over his Premier League outings this calendar year, directing 13 of his shots on target – five of which have come this term.
Here are some of the replies shared when the club posted Almiron’s goal on Twitter…
