Schar wins contract extension

|

Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar has reportedly been handed a contract extension that will take his stay in Tyneside to 2022.

The report has been broken by Swiss publication Blick and it should come as no surprise to any Toon fans with the Magpies not keen on losing an asset for nothing.

From the club’s point of view, it must seem like an act that has very little act as they have not had to offer better terms or a lengthy extension but they had instead triggered an option in the defenders contract that extends his current deal 12 months.

Schar has had an up and down time as a United player with him really excelling under Rafa Benitez in his first season but his regression was worrying under Steve Bruce in his second season.

He has since found some form in his third campaign at St. James’ Park and the injury he picked up against Southampton came at a really bad time for the 29-year old with him finally looking like he may refind his feet.

He is currently serving a three match suspension as a result of a red card picked up in his return to the side. Just like the injury, there Schar is unlucky to find himself sidelined. It was a very harsh red card brandished by Mike Dean and despite United’s appeal, the decision was not overturned.

To highlight just how unjust the sending off was, Kelechi Iheanacho committed a similar but worse foul in Newcastle’s 4-2 win at Leicester but the in form striker was only cautioned with a yellow card, a decision not overturned by VAR.

He joins the likes of Dwight Gayle and Jacob Murphy in being handed contract extensions as Newcastle look to ensure they do not lose players without recouping a transfer fee.
