Many Newcastle United fans have been reacting on social media, after the club shared that Fabian Schar had won the North East Football Writers’ Association’s Player of the Year Award for 2019.

The accolade comes as the latest to be added to Schar’s trophy cabinet after a strong calendar year at St. James’ Park, having scooped the Premier League and Match of the Day Goal of the Month awards for February for his 30-yard screamer against Burnley.

Schar is now the fourth Toon star to secure the NEFWA’s Player of the Year award, and marginally beat teammate Isaac Hayden to the gong ahead of Middlesbrough goalkeeper Darren Randolph.

Martin Dubravka was last year’s winner, while Jamaal Lascelles and Matt Ritchie shared the honour in 2017 after helping to guide the club out of the Championship as league winners and solidify our presence back in the top-flight.

Speaking on receiving the award, Schar told NUFC.co.uk: “I’m very honoured to win this award in my first full year at Newcastle United. I know that some great players, like Kevin Keegan, Alan Shearer, Juninho and Fabricio Coloccini have won it before and I am proud to follow in the footsteps of those players.”

Schar featured in 35 Premier League games in 2019 over the 2018/19 and ’19/20 campaigns, plus three FA Cup and one Carabao Cup appearances, scoring six goals and assisting a further strike.

The Swiss international was not the only winner, though, as Sean Longstaff has scooped the Young Player of the Year award, and each will received their gongs at a gala dinner on February 2.

Here are some of the messages shared as fans reacted to Schar’s recognition by the North East Football Writers’ Association…

In other Newcastle United news, the club are chasing a loan-to-buy deal for a £22.5million forward.
