Salty Klopp Takes A Swipe At Newcastle And The Hypocrisy Is Off The Scale

|

Jurgen Klopp was a manager I really admired, even liked, but lately, he’s becoming insufferable. Always whining and pointing fingers instead of taking accountability for Liverpool’s slide in form.

Now he’s gone too far. He’s taken aim at Newcastle and this, this I will not abide.

Making a reference to Dan Ashworth and Eddie Howe’s recent comments around the size of the club where Howe said: “So why not (Newcastle as big as Man United)? … The aims of this club, with the ambition behind the scenes, are huge. We now have to try and deliver those huge ambitions. But there is no ceiling here.”

Of course that comment is open to interpretation and one way to look at is that Newcastle are in the fortunate position of having the wealthiest backers in world football, so of course there’s no ceiling. However, there is a ceiling isn’t there? There’s this little thing called Financial Fair Play which means, for all our spending power, we are limited to what we can actually do each year.

Does Klopp Have A Point?

Yes. And it's beautiful.

No. He's talking Krapp

Klopp was speaking to the media ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Manchester City where he bemoaned the spending power of their rivals when he suddenly turned his attention to Newcastle, saying: “I heard now that at Newcastle somebody [sporting director Dan Ashworth] said ‘there is no ceiling for this club’. Yes! He is right. He is absolutely right. There is no ceiling for Newcastle. Congratulations, but other clubs have ceilings.” (Via The Chronicle)

There’s a bitterness there that’s actually quite beautiful in a way. But while Klopp has a point, and while he’s probably right to be a bit upset and worried, the fact is, Liverpool can out-spend Newcastle for a good few years yet while Newcastle grow their commercial revenue. Meanwhile, Liverpool have been big spenders for a while. They just haven’t spent it wisely *cough*Andy Carroll*cough*

I mean ….
