Miguel Almiron: “I feel absolutely at home.”

|

Perhaps Newcastle’s most in-form player at the moment is our Paraguayan dynamo, Miguel Almiron.

NUFC TV sat down with Almiron to talk about his current form and life at Newcastle under Eddie Howe and one thing was startlingly clear from the outset … Miggy’s still not confident speaking English.

Whereas Bruno has been in England since January and now speaks better English than I do, Almiron is in his third year in England following a three-year spell in the US and still opted to do his interview in his native tongue. Not that there’s anything wrong with that perse, it just strikes me as odd that after six years of living in English-speaking countries, he’s still not comfortable speaking the lingo. In fact, I’m not even sure if he can, so rare are interviews with the South American.

Language aside, the interview was an excellent one and Miggy spoke highly of Eddie Howe and his style of football, acknowledging that Howe’s style of play is allowing him to spend more time in dangerous positions which is clearly working to his advantage in terms of goal output. Miggy said: “I think the team has changed almost beyond all recognition, in every sense of the word. I think from a personal point of view, my role now takes me closer to goal on more occasions.”

Speaking about the difference Howe has made to his career, Almiron was full of praise once again: “When he arrived, he kind of inculcated a lot of new things into the club – new ideas, new philosophies within the club. He didn’t just do that on a team basis, he did it on an individual and personal level as well.”

Miggy was asked how long he sees himself at Newcastle and he flashed his trademark smile before saying: “I feel absolutely at home. From minute one, I’ve always said this – I’ve been treated fantastically well by everyone here at the club, the fans. My family are extremely happy here. The local people are as good as gold with us all the time, so I’m grateful for all that support. Currently no intention whatsoever, it’s not something that’s on my mind at all – what’s in my mind right now is enjoying the moment, enjoying how we’re all improving, and enjoying keeping helping the team to improve and to keep winning.”
